FEDERAL RESOURCES

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Laws and regulations administered by the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Title 40 of the Code of the Code of Federal Regulations:  The Section of the Code of Federal Regulations that deals with the EPA and its mission of protecting human health and the environment. 
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA): The Act gives the EPA the authority to control hazardous waste, including the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste; set forth guidelines for the management of non-hazardous solid wastes; and address environmental problems resulting from underground storage tanks.
  • Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA):  Commonly known as Superfund, the Act provides a Federal "Superfund" to clean up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous-waste sites as well as accidents, spills, and other emergency releases of pollutants and contaminants into the environment.
  • CERCLA Overview:  CERCLA established prohibitions and requirements concerning closed and abandoned hazardous waste sites, provided for liability of persons responsible for releases of hazardous waste at these sites, and established a trust fund to provide for cleanup when no responsible party could be identified.
  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES):  As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the NPDES permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States.
  • U.S. EPA Summary of the Clean Water Act (CWA): The Act establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters.
